What is radiant floor heating?
Radiant floor heating is a system that uses heated water lines (hydronic) or electric cables embedded in a concrete slab to warm a garage space evenly from the ground up.
Radiant floor heating distributes warmth directly through the garage floor slab itself, either by circulating hot water through tubes (hydronic systems) or running electric resistance cable beneath the concrete surface. Heat rises from the floor to warm the space without relying on fans, ducts, or forced air.
In a garage setting, radiant systems differ fundamentally from traditional forced-air heaters. Forced-air units push warm air through the space, creating temperature swings and leaving cold spots, especially near doors or high ceilings where heat escapes. Radiant systems provide steady, even warmth across the floor and keep concrete temperatures higher, reducing moisture and improving comfort for people spending time in the garage.
Hydronic radiant systems connect to a boiler or heat pump and circulate warm water through PEX tubing laid in the slab during construction or retrofit. Electric radiant systems embed heating cable directly in concrete and draw power from a thermostat. Both types are built into the structural slab, meaning they cannot be easily added to an existing garage unless the floor is removed and re-poured.
Because the heat source is fixed in the floor, radiant systems work well for garages where workspace comfort matters, such as workshops, hobby garages, or service bays. They operate silently and free up wall space occupied by conventional heaters.
